Interactive Map Dashboards Reveal Virus Distribution Pattern

The novel coronavirus, officially named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been spread from China throughout the world in the beginning of 2020. Public health experts are working around the clock in developing effective treatment to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

The ArcGIS technology has played an important role in the battle against the new virus as the public may not be able to get sufficient and up-to-date information easily about the distribution pattern of the contagious disease. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professionals and public health officials around the world have developed a list of novel coronavirus dashboards to provide a holistic view of the information on an interactive and live-updating map about the location of the cases and the virus spread pattern to the general public.

The government of Hong Kong released the latest situation of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Riding on the ArcGIS platform, Esri China (Hong Kong) is honored to voluntarily join Smart City Consortium (SCC) in the development of the latest situation of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) interactive map dashboard released by the government of Hong Kong, in order to give more instant information in English and Chinese, including the latest number of confirmed cases, cases still hospitalized for investigation, ruled out cases, and buildings where confirmed cases have stayed in the past 14 days. The Information Services Department, HKSARG filmed a video to explain how the map-sensitive dashboard has increased information transparency, helped the government in information dissemination and raised awareness of virus spread prevention.

Upon clicking on the points of reference on the map-sensitive dashboard, more details about the confirmed cases can be shown when users resize the map, and the case list will automatically display the related cases in a particular region. With the use of ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Dashboards and ArcGIS API for Python, the display function showing the infection according to time sequence is added so that the public will get a better understanding of the date and place relating to the infection cases. With the updated clustering capabilities in ArcGIS Online, users can easily uncover hidden patterns of the virus distribution.

Statistics of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Hong Kong can be viewed by date.

The other interactive map dashboard has been released to capture and visualize the anti-epidemic information about the coronavirus disease in Macau using ArcGIS Online and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in near real time automatically without manual updates. On a single map interface, users may view the number of confirmed cases, severe cases, ruled-out cases and available resources such as the location and number of surgical masks for sales.
